Clear Out Your Rain
Gutters
Your rain gutters are
designed to fortify your home against water damage. If you don’t take care to
keep them clean, however, they can actually make your water damage problems
worse. Rain gutters function by filtering rainwater away from your home’s
foundation where it cannot cause any damage. This works great when they are
cleaned out, but when they are full of leaves and other debris water simply
spills over the top of them allowing the water to assault the foundation of
your home.
- Check
Your Sealant – Make
sure that there are no gaps or holes in the sealant surrounding your doors
and that windows are filled in. This will stop the rain from seeping
inside and creating mold and
mildew issues.
- Have
The Roof Inspected – A
roof in poor shape will be no match for a heavy storm. If you have
missing, broken, or cracked shingles, you should have them replaced
without delay. The best way to be on top of this is to have your roof
regularly inspected so any issues can be repaired immediately.
- Have
Your Foundation Inspected –
It is easy to overlook the importance of your foundation in preventing water
damage. If
it is cracked or has any weak spots, water can easily seep down through it
and into your basement or crawlspace. You should have your foundation
regularly inspected by a professional so you can avoid this issue.
- Trim
Any Unwieldy Trees –
The last thing you want during a heavy, windy storm is for a tree limb to
crash into your home. Along with the initial damage this causes, it will
also allow large amounts of rainwater to flood into your home. If you have
any unwieldy tree branches that have the potential to break off, you
should have them trimmed so they don’t become a hazard during the next
storm.
- Take Care With Electricity – During heavy rain and the risk of possible floods, make sure that all electrical appliances are stored upstairs, where water is unlikely to reach them. If your home does flood, don’t go near the fuse box and ensure that all sockets are covered.
